Understanding EMDR and how it works
Traditional EMDR: desensitizing first and foremost
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is based on the principle of adaptive reprocessing of information: by reactivating a traumatic memory while stimulating both cerebral hemispheres, we help the brain to "digest" what has been blocked.
In the traditional approach, we start with the source memory: we identify the image, the negative belief, the emotional charge, then directly engage the desensitization process.
This method works very well for simple traumas - an accident, a one-off aggression, an isolated event.
But in more complex cases (multiple traumas, attachment disorders, chronic anxiety, depression, exhaustion), this direct desensitization can become too intense.
The nervous system, already on high alert, may not have the necessary resources to withstand this emotional exposure.
It's a bit like trying to get a boat afloat in the middle of a storm: the risk is not of sinking, but of reactivating the swell without having stabilized the hull.

My approach: reprogramming before desensitizing
My EMDR protocol is based on the opposite logic. Rather than immediately plunging into the past, I begin by reprogramming calm. This is an essential stage in which the brain learns to find its safe bearings in the present, here and now.
This phase helps stabilize the nervous system before any emotional exposure: we first work on physiological regulation, breathing, body awareness and the ability to come back to oneself. In other words, we prepare the ground before sowing.
It's only once this base has been consolidated that desensitization becomes useful and ecological. The brain can then revisit traumatic memories without dissociating or overloading itself, because it already knows how to return to calm.
The difference is simple and profound:
- Traditional EMDR desensitizes to restore calm.
- My protocol finds calm to desensitize.
This is what makes this approach suitable for all situations, from the oldest traumas to everyday blockages and relational wounds.
EMDR en visio: an accessible and effective approach
How does an EMDR video session work?
A remote EMDR session follows the same protocol as an in-office session. The patient is seated in a quiet place, connected by videolink via a secure link.
Bilateral stimulation - which alternately activates the two hemispheres of the brain - can be performed in three ways, all of which have been scientifically proven to be equally effective:
- visual, through eye movement;
- by touch, with alternating taps on knees, shoulders or hands;
- or by sounds, sent alternately to each ear.
In visio, we most often use sound (via headphones) or touch (self-guided tapping). The screen doesn't create distance: it becomes a therapeutic space in its own right. It's not the room that heals, but the link, the voice, the look, the rhythm.

The advantages of the video format for trauma work
Visio EMDR therapy offers a paradoxically enhanced sense of security: the person is in their familiar environment, with their bearings and resources all around them.
This often facilitates access to the right emotion, without overload.
Visio also offers great freedom: no need to travel, fewer constraints, and a more stable environment for the nervous system.
In an approach like mine, where the reprogramming of calm precedes desensitization, this familiar environment becomes a powerful therapeutic ally.
Overcoming trauma with EMDR on video
Which traumas can be soothed with EMDR on video?
EMDR can be used to treat many types of emotional wounds:
- accidents, assaults, violence or losses ;
- relational or attachment traumas ;
- burn-out, phobias, anxiety, sleep disorders ;
- persistent emotions: shame, guilt, powerlessness.
The brain doesn't distinguish between "small" and "big" traumas: it distinguishes between what remains blocked and what circulates.
As soon as a memory retains an active emotional charge, EMDR can help transform it.
How bilateral stimulation helps desensitize memories
Each stimulation creates a rhythm, a breath between the cerebral hemispheres.
It's as if the brain were dancing again: one step to the left, one step to the right.
Gradually, the emotion loses its intensity, the body relaxes and the memory becomes bearable.
But this "neural dance" is only possible if the ground is ready.
That's why, in my practice, I always start by reprogramming calm:
we first learn to regulate the nervous system, to regain solid internal support, before exploring the more sensitive areas.
Before you start: choosing your EMDR practitioner
Certification, trust and the therapeutic alliance
Choosing an EMDR practitioner is above all choosing a human alliance.
Make sure the therapist is trained and certified, and takes the time to explain his or her method.
In video, this alliance is not weakened - it's often more direct, more intimate.
The distance of the screen sometimes allows us to express ourselves more freely, without fear of judgment.
What's important is the feeling of security and trust that is the cornerstone of any transformation process.
In a nutshell: why choose visio EMDR?
- Scientifically validated, identical effectiveness to in-office EMDR.
- Unique approach: reprogramming of calm before desensitization, for more stable, environmentally-friendly work.
- Familiar, soothing surroundings, ideal for emotional regulation.
- Total accessibility, wherever you are in the world, at your own pace.
Conclusion
Visio EMDR is not a fallback solution, but a natural evolution of therapy.
It allows the patient to work in depth, in an environment that encourages regulation and trust.
The brain does not see the screen: it perceives security, presence and rhythm.
And sometimes, it's precisely in this remote setting that the magic happens - where gaze, voice and the bilateral dance of the brain are enough to reopen the path to calm, inner freedom and lasting healing.
where the look, the voice and the bilateral dance of the brain are enough to reopen the path to calm, inner freedom and lasting healing.
